San Diego Sensations at the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA)

The twenty-year-old OMA is a regional cultural gem that is deeply entrenched and connected to the community it serves. In addition to offering a world-class rotating collection of modern art, OMA runs classes, concerts, culinary events, films, lectures, parties and tours as well as being a popular rental venue. There’s also a carefully curated store onsite. Current exhibitions on display showcase a diverse group of artists working in a startling variety of mediums:

• Robin Bright/ Tom Driscoll—A Dual Retrospective

Tom’s thought provoking contemporary sculpture in a variety of mediums from stone to recycled plastic to resin beckons the observer to interpret the work via their own experience while Robin’s mixed media and tinted hydrocal prints are more delicate and ephemeral in nature.

• Laddie John Dill—Light Sentences and Light Traps

Laddie’s astonishing hand blown glass tubing, argon, mercury and sand installation is a spectacular display of color and light while his welded and polished aircraft aluminum series embodies startling linear compositions that treat metal in an unexpected way.

• Marjorie Nodelman—San Diego Artist

Marjorie was a popular eighties socialite/artist known for her vibrant acrylic paintings about transportation drama, encounters with the Headlight Child, produce and California scenery themes.

• Bill Rastetter—Street Art Reinterpreted

Bill was inspired by street art of South America to create a series of c-type chromogenic prints mounted on black acrylic. The series showcases layered thought-provoking imagery based on urban graffiti.

• Deanne Sabeck—Luminous

Deanne creates glass, metal and light sculptures that cast a stunning myriad of prism reflections on the walls. She is best known for her “Skyscapes” public art installation at the San Diego International Airport.

Go To The Movies, In Oceanside

Everyone likes going to the movies. It’s so nice getting a big group of friends together or that special someone and enjoying a good film on that huge screen, sitting in big comfy seats, with a big tub of popcorn in hand.

You know how you can make going to the movies better and even more exciting? Go to a movie in Oceanside! Oceanside is now offering a valet parking service in front of the Regal Cinemas at, 401 Mission Avenue, in Downtown Oceanside. The Valet parking is free for Regal Cinemas patrons, but can also be used by anyone coming to Downtown Oceanside at the current rate of $3. The service is currently available Tuesdays, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6:00pm to 11:00pm.

What makes this even better is that the Oceanside Regal Cinema and this valet service is just steps away from the beach, Oceanside’s famous pier and a ton of shops and restaurants. So make a day or night out of going to the movies. Come see a movie in Oceanside, then after take a walk around Downtown and visit the many shops, have a bite at a local restaurant and take a sunset walk on the pier or the beach.

We love going to the movies so much we put together a short list of movie going tips to enhance your movie going experience.

Buy Your Tickets in Bulk to Save Money

Buying tickets in bulk will save you a lot of money. Places like Costco offer movie tickets sold in bulk at a discounted price. Check with your theater and see if they offer discounts on bulk bought tickets. Also, if you are a AAA Member, they offer discounted tickets as well. This way, you’ll be able to see more movies and save a lot of green.

Sit In The Back For Best Sound Quality

Here’s a little trick, sitting towards the back of the theater allows for premium sound quality. When sound techs check for sound quality, they usually sit about 2/3 way to the back. The sound echoes off the back of the theater and right into your ears for an even more exciting experience.

Join Your Theaters Reward Program

Most theaters offer a reward or loyalty program. Regal Oceanside offers one: Sign up for their free Regal Crown Club, earn points, get discounts on food items and eventually earn free tickets. This is a great way to get extra stuff for free!

Make your movie day or night an experience by going to a movie in Oceanside. Enjoy the beautiful Oceanside weather, shops, restaurants, beaches, pier and free valet parking.

To view movie schedules or to buy tickets to Oceanside Regal Cinemas, visit Oceanside Regal.

Opened in September 2015, Barrel Republic is a welcome addition to Oceanside’s growing population of craft beer enthusiasts. Everything is made in house from scratch such as the smoked salmon and flatbread dough. Crowd pleasers include the Bacon Wrapped Pork Belly, Spicy Butternut Mac & Cheese and Wild Mushroom “French” Dip.

With a reputation for being a “chef’s chef,” Davin Waite has a following that stretches to Los Angeles and beyond so it’s no surprise that his Japanese style pub, The Whet Noodle, opened in late December to rave reviews! The restaurant specializes in traditional ramen noodles with an option of duck shoyu or vegan and gluten-free hot and sour miso broth as a base; veggie, pork, fish or slow-smoked duck as a protein and toppings such as garlic chips or hard boiled egg. And there’s more yummy dishes coming soon, because Chef Davin is hard at work developing new menu items for The Whet Noodle.

Green Oceanside Wedding: Celebrating in Eco-Friendly Style

Did you know that Oceanside is on the Road to Zero Waste with a goal is of reaching a 75-90% diversion/recycling rate by 2020? If you’re passionate about the environment, here are ways to make your wedding more eco-friendly in Oceanside.

Invitations

Choose invitations made from recycled paper and select vegetable base dyes. Reduce the amount of paper you use and ditch the inner envelope and have your guests RSVP online. Of course, you could send out evites if you’re not worried about the etiquette police. Check out Designs by Lenila‘s invitations that are created from recycled and eco friendly paper and materials: 100% recycled cardstock, spun palm tree fibers for the envelope, and the handmade mulberry paper made from the bark of the Saa Tree in Thailand.

Venue

Find a venue that fits your style so you don’t need to do over-the-top decorations.  Use lighting or reusable fabric to add that special touch, but paper tissue products like Chinese lanterns and pom poms should be reconsidered.  Also, ask your venue what steps they take to help reduce, reuse, recycle as well as water conservation.

The QLN Conference Center uses uplightling, gobos, and fabric draping to transform their exhibit hall into a luxurious wedding reception.

Centerpieces and Decorations

Visit your local resale shop and find fun mismatched vases, jars, and tins to hold flowers that are currently in-season and purchased from your local organic grower. Avoid over Pinteresting your wedding and leave out items like fabric pennants (unless made from scrap material) and disposable tulle.  Balloons should be avoided at all costs. #balloonsblow

No Disposable Anything

Rent washable place settings, flatware, glassware and linens like this beautiful set from Anar Party Rental or go for the eclectic look and buy china in all different patterns from a resale store like Lucky Street Productions.  Don’t forget to consider your barware too as anything thrown away goes into our landfills.

Catering

There are local caterers that are paving the way for farm to table cuisine.  This means that they’re going the extra mile to make sure that all of their ingredients are locally sourced.  Ask how appetizers will be served as today’s trend is to have everything individually portioned out.  While it makes for a nice presentation, all of those little plastic containers are headed for the dumpster. Check out how Anything But Ordinary Catering uses champagne flutes to serve fruit salad.

Favors

Consider edible favors like chocolates or caramels, or something that can be planted like seeds or succulents, but make sure to forego the cute packaging, labels and ribbons. You could also choose handcrafted candles made from soy wax, scented with essential oils, or 100% natural handmade soaps.

You could also have a donation station where instead of the guests leaving with a favor, they choose a charity where you’ll donate in their name. So instead of paying $3 for a favor, you’re donating $3 to one of your favorite causes.

Recycle

This one seems obvious, but it’s often overlooked.  Many venues only have a single dumpster and aren’t taking the time to recycle. This is especially true if your caterer is required to take the trash off-site. Do not assume recycling is being done.  You must ask everyone involved and be sure they understand that how we treat the planet is important to us all.  You may also want to set aside cans for table scraps and composting that you can process after the big event. Learn about composting and more ways to recycle at Oceanside’s Earth Day Festival.

Estate Jewelry

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something reused. Shopping at estate sales or stores that deal in estate jewelry is a fun way to help the environment.  Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt? These fabulous finds were shared to us by Lucky Street Productions in South Oceanside, but I have a feeling that they won’t be there long.
